The group stage of EURO 2024 has come to a dramatic close, setting the stage for an exciting round of 16. Traditional football powerhouses have largely lived up to expectations, while a few surprises have kept fans on the edge of their seats.
In Group A, hosts Germany flexed their muscles, topping the group, with Switzerland securing the second spot. Hungary and Scotland’s campaigns came to an end, finishing third and fourth respectively.
Group B saw Spain emerge victorious, followed closely by Italy. In a shocking turn of events, 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia failed to progress, finishing third, while Albania ended their journey in fourth place.
England continued their strong form in major tournaments, winning Group C. Denmark narrowly edged out Slovenia on disciplinary points to claim second place, although Slovenia’s performance was enough to see them through as one of the best third-placed teams. Serbia, unfortunately, couldn’t keep pace and finished last in the group.
Group D provided one of the tournament’s biggest surprises, with Austria clinching top spot ahead of football giants France. The Netherlands, despite a third-place finish, managed to scrape through to the knockout stages, leaving Poland as the odd team out.
Romania pulled off an impressive feat in Group E, topping the group ahead of Belgium. Slovakia’s third-place finish was enough to see them progress, while Ukraine’s EURO 2024 journey came to an early end.
Finally, Group F saw Portugal dominate proceedings, with Türkiye securing the runner-up spot. Georgia, in their first-ever European Championship appearance, defied expectations by advancing as a best third-placed team, leaving Czechia to bow out of the tournament.
The round of 16 promises to deliver thrilling matchups as the remaining teams vie for EURO 2024 glory. Football fans around the world eagerly anticipate the knockout stages, where every match could potentially lead to an upset or a moment of brilliance that will be remembered for years to come.
