Referee Daniel Siebert, one of the 19 referees selected for UEFA EURO 2024, is feeling great and excited about the upcoming tournament in his home country, Germany. Siebert, along with 88 other referees, assistants, and video match officials, attended a two-day workshop in Frankfurt last month as part of their preparations for the tournament.
The 40-year-old Berlin native can sense the growing excitement among the German population, as they dream of victory on home soil. Siebert compares the atmosphere and tension to that of the 2006 World Cup, where the whole country was going crazy by the start of the tournament.

Having been part of the officiating team for EURO 2020, Siebert can lean on that experience to prepare for the 2024 edition. However, he also has the added benefit of feeling right at home, knowing many people, stadiums, and staff from the German Football Association (DFB) and UEFA.

The referees are already benefiting from spending time together ahead of the tournament, with a family atmosphere building at their base camp just outside Frankfurt. Siebert emphasizes the importance of feeling comfortable when spending several weeks together as a group, as it positively impacts their performance.
UEFA has issued a new directive for EURO 2024 to encourage fair play and respect, whereby referees will speak directly with team captains to explain decisions on the pitch. Siebert believes this is a good message and hopes that everyone will agree that this was a great idea for the good of football after the tournament.
